The route along the Black sea coast is closed to more or less everybody. The region of Georgia between Psou and Enguri (sp?) rivers, known as Abkhazia, has effectively seceded. It is heavily mined, the border between Abkhazia and the rest of Georgia is a military front line and nobody can cross it.
The border between Abkhazia and Russia is not much better. Locals can cross, and foreigners could just about do it with a military escort, but its a lot of paperwork.

land borders between Russia and Georgia do operate - there's one at Chertov Most between Qazbegi and Vladikavkaz, and another tunnel between N and S Ossetia. As far as I know, both of these are open to locals (Rus and Geo citizens) only. Most of the lorries between Russia and Turkey take the Chertov Most route.
Georgian roads are not known for their good condition or safety record. But compared to the risks of driving through Abkhazia, Georgia proper is a breeze. |
