Thirty-six residents of Tuapse in the Krasnodar territory asked for medical aid after the amount of hydrogen sulphide in the air sharply increased, presumably as a result of an industrial outburst.

"The source of the gas has not been established yet," Head of the Tuapse Department for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Alexei Bobryshev has told Interfax.
He said an outburst of hydrogen sulphide occurred at about midnight.
No monitoring
He also said that an administrative investigation will be initiated into the incident. The outburst of gas may have occurred because the port and the petrochemical enterprise had closed down their monitoring stations, Bobryshev said.

Emergency situation
An emergency situation has been announced in Tuapse. Mayor Galina Zhigun said at a press conference that the control services proved unprepared to warn of the accident.
The Tuapse authorities are holding an emergency meeting attended by representatives of the local civil defense and emergency situations department and other life-support services |
