EUR 7 million
The European Union granted Romania about 7.35 million euros (US$8 million) to upgrade 150 kilometers (95 miles) of railway between Bucharest and the Black Sea port of Constanta, authorities said Thursday.

Three years
The funding will be used to upgrade track, signaling and telecommunications systems, and railway stations.

The Romanian government will spend 2.45 million euros (US$ 2.70 million) on the project, which is scheduled to take three years to complete.

The German company Deutsche Eisenbahn Consult has won the contract for carrying out the work.

EU preparations
The project is part of a program to help Romania prepare for membership in the European Union, which it hopes to join by 2007.
