Declining trade Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov met with Ukraine's Leonid Kuchma on Thursday, kicking off three days of talks aimed at reversing declining trade volumes and spurring investment.
In his first official visit to Ukraine, Parvanov called for stimulating bilateral trade and investment, singling out energy as the most promising sector.
"Very bad tendency" Kuchma also stressed the "very, very bad tendency" in trade relations between the two countries.
Previously, "trade turnover was US$500 million and now we have only US$300 million, so we're very concerned," Kuchma told reporters after the meeting.
Support Parvanov also vowed that Bulgaria would support Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union (news - web sites), the World Trade Organization and NATO.

Officials from the two countries signed agreements on copyright protection, nuclear safety and regulation, natural resource preservation, and cultural cooperation.
Ukraine's Bulgarian diaspora The Bulgarian president was to meet with Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, parliament speaker Volodymr Lytvyn and Foreign Minister Anatoliy Zlenko before flying to the Black Sea port of Odessa on Friday to meet with members of the Bulgarian diaspora.
Some 150,000 people of Bulgarian descent live in Ukraine, more than any other country outside of Bulgaria. |
