Heavy snowfall and winds close ports in Romania |

Snowstorms Three Black Sea ports and an airport were closed Sunday after winds and heavy snowstorms blanketed most of Romania, blocking roads and causing long delays in rail traffic. Three ports closed On the Black Sea coast, the ports of Midia-Navodari, Constanta and Mangalia were closed as winds gusted up to 75 kilometers (47 miles) an hour, whipping waves 8 meters (24 feet) high. There was heavy snowfall in the region, and Danube Delta ports were also closed. The airport in the western city of Arad on the Romanian-Hungarian border was also closed due to bad weather.

Delays and hard work Up to 1,000 workers from the Interior Ministry unblocked roads and railway lines in the most affected areas in north Romania, the capital and the south, where temperatures plunged to minus 10 degrees C (14 Fahrenheit). Trains arriving at Bucharest's Gara de Nord station were delayed by up to two hours.
Snow reaches 1.5 meter Snow fell on much of Romania, with snowdrifts reaching up to 1.5 meters (4 1/2 feet) in the south, according to private news agency Mediafax. |
