Protest rally An unspecified number of Georgian displaced persons (IDPs) who fled Abkhazia during the 1992-93 war blocked traffic across the main bridge over the Inguri River that marks the administrative border between Abkhazia and the rest of Georgia on January 6th demanding closure of the railway route between Russia and Abkhazia, which was resumed on December 25.
More reasons Protesters also demand return of the IDPs to their homes in Abkhazia and withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping troops from the conflict zone.

Another demand is the release of 4 detained Georgians detained in late December in Gali district. Abkhaz authorities claim that the four were among 36 residents of the villages of Otobaya, Gagida, and Nabakevi detained for passport violations on 25 December. 32 of them are already released.
UN mediates The deputy head of the UN Mission in Georgia Roza Otunbaeva visited Georgia’s breakaway Abkhaz capital Sukhumi to negotiate with the leadership of the separatist region to release the four Georgians. |
