Confidence and security The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Friday said trust among naval forces operating in the Black Sea will be significantly increased under an agreement that came into force on Jan. 1.
The agreement, endorsed last year by Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania and Turkey, "opens in principle a new page in the development of confidence and security in Europe," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Further cooperation Under the agreement, the six Black Sea nations committed to further contacts between their naval forces, increased exchanges of information about their activities and enhanced cooperation in fighting ecological threats, terrorism and organized crime, the Foreign Ministry said.

The agreement officially came into force on the first day of 2003.
Blackseafor The six Black Sea nations already had developed a pattern of naval cooperation. In April 2001, they created the joint naval force, Blackseafor, to conduct anti-terrorist operations, humanitarian missions, search and rescue operations, and ecological monitoring.
Blackseafor has no permanent presence or offensive capability, and its members commit resources based on availability and areas of expertise. Its last exercises were in August. |
