Blue Stream
Russian natural gas reached Turkey Monday, signaling the completion of the world's deepest undersea pipeline.

Gas reached the Turkish port city of Samsun around 9:30 a.m. (0730GMT) Monday through the 446-kilometer (278-mile) pipeline, known as Blue Stream, said Gulsem Korkmaz, spokeswoman for the Turkish state-run pipeline company, BOTAS.

World deepest
Some 360-kilometers (215-miles) of the pipeline travels at a depth of 2,100 meters (7,000 feet) below the surface of the Black Sea. A second pipeline will take the gas from Samsun to the Turkish capital Ankara. The project cost US$3.2 billion.

"We expect the gas to be ready for use by mid-January," Korkmaz said.

Turkish gas expansion
Turkey says the new pipeline will meet its expanding energy needs. It also aims to eventually export surplus gas to western Europe.

Turkey plans to start receiving an annual 3 billion cubic meters (105 billion cubic feet) of natural gas in 2003. The volume will increase to an annual 16 billion cubic meters (560 billion cubic feet) in 2008.

Turkey also imports natural gas from its eastern neighbor Iran and plans to buy more from Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
