SOFIA, Bulgaria - Environment ministers of Black Sea coastal countries convened in Bulgaria's capital on Friday for talks on a plan to restore and protect plant and wildlife in one of the region's most polluted bodies of water.

Ministers of Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and an expert of the Russian environment ministry were participating.

A major problem for the nearly landlocked Black sea, which is connected to the world's oceans only through the bottleneck of the Bosporus strait, are uncontrolled waste releases from surrounding countries and tributary rivers. Decaying waste absorbs oxygen from the water and kills fish, seaweed and other species.

Anaerobic bacteria, which produce sulfur hydrogen and live in sea depths worsen the problem.

Poachers in coastal rivers are responsible for a severe reduction of dolphin, shark and turbot in the sea.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Simeon Saxcoburggotski urged participants to take steps for better treatment of waste waters that go into the Black Sea and its tributary rivers.

"There are no political borders in environment protection," he said.

"The Black Sea, which is recognized as the most polluted sea on earth, illustrates the need of salvation and protection of the common natural resources," Bulgarian Environment Minister Dolores Arsenova said.

Her Turkish colleague, Fevzi Aytekin, expressed concern that "excessive fishing may lead to distorting of the Black Sea biological balance."
