The start of Russian gas supplies to Turkey as part of the Blue Stream project, through a pipeline along the bed of the Black Sea, is planned for October 2002, the Gazprom press service said.

By 2003 Turkey should have received 2 billion cubic meters of gas along this route.

This week the ship Castro-8 will start to lay about 10 km of pipes to join the shallow and deep sections of the pipeline on the Turkish side.

The statement noted that Italy"s Saipem, which is Gazprom"s contractor, has already completed construction of the second line of the deep-sea part of the Blue Stream pipeline.

Construction of the first line of the pipeline was completed on March 31, 2002 and the pipeline is currently being tested. It is planned that by mid-June this year the building of the second line of the pipeline will be completed. It is planned to complete testing the pipeline by August, the press service said.

Construction of the second line of the deep-sea section has been underway since February this year. A total of 800 km of gas pipeline has been laid along the Black Sea bed at a depth of up to 2,150 meters. The pipeline is being laid at a rate of 5.7 km per day, which is a world record for this type of work, the statement said.

According to the company, construction of the 250-km onshore section of the pipeline in Krasnodar territory is continuing also. To date, a total of 232 km of pipes has been welded, of which 142 km have been laid in trenches; land preparation has been carried out in 76 km and installation work at the Krasnodar compressor station is being completed.
