Ukraine's population dropped by 346,000 over 10 months, the State Statistics Committee announced Thursday, reflecting a continuing decline over the decade following independence from the Soviet Union.

As of Oct. 13, Ukraine's population stood at 48,069,000, down from 48,415,000 in December, the statistics committee said. That was a 0.71 percent drop.

4 million in 12 years
The current birth rate is eight per 1,000 people and death rate is 15.3 per 1,000 people, according to the Den daily. In all, Ukraine has lost some 4 million people since 1991, in part due to migration.

The populations of many former Soviet republics have plummeted over the past decade. Many experts attribute the lower life expectancy and birth rates to post-Soviet economic turmoil.

Poverty
The United Nations has estimated that as many as 20 percent of Ukrainians live in poverty. The current monthly subsistence level in Ukraine is estimated at 365 hryvna (US$68) and the minimum wage is 165 hryvna (US$31).
