The population of Georgia -- excluding the unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia -- was 4.5 million at the time of the January 2002 census, State Statistics Department Chairman Temur Beridze |
said on 31 October. He estimated the population of those two regions at 5 percent of the total population. At the time of the 1989 Soviet census, the population of the Georgian SSR was 5.5 million. |
