If you're into Crimean history, and especially if you're interested in seeing the formerly-secret Soviet submarine base at Balaklava (near Sevastopol), it's possible to hire a boat and captain - directly across the harbor from the entrance to the cave where they used to repair the subs. There's also a sub in dry dock nearby, or at least there was in August.

My wife and I hired a 30' boat, complete with
captain and first mate, for $15 an hour two months ago. The 30-something captain has a terrific knowledge of the area, although his English is very limited. Watch for dolphins if you decide to take the tour.

While in Sevastopol, do plan to spend some time in "Panorama", a building that houses a 360-degree diorama that depicts Sevastopol during the Crimean War. I've never seen anything like it.
