"The American people are profoundly grateful to you and the people of Georgia for your invaluable contribution to the campaign to free the world of terrorism," US President George W. Bush's message to his Georgian counterpart Eduard Shevardnadze, sent on September 20, says.

"The United States was directly attacked last Septembers 11, but terrorism darkens the prospects of all people who seek to live peace, freedom and prosperity. As we unite to defeat terrorism, with perseverance and courage we will certainly prevail.

Georgia's decision to ally itself firmly with the cause of tolerance and understanding means we will work together to build a world that values its people and gives them a future of freedom and hope."
