According to the chairman of the Crimean Tartar Mejlis, Mustafa Dzhemilev, the opposition protests are “highly unlikely to result in President Leonid Kuchma’s resignation and will cause damage to our country.” Dzhemilev spoke to a news conference in Simferopol, the Crimea, on Sept. 16.

He reminded that the Mejlis, as well as Our Ukraine parliamentary faction that the Crimean Tartar leaders are part of, did not participate in the actions of protest against the
president. Dzemilev explained his standpoint by the president’s efforts to settle the problems of the Crimean Tartar people, Media Prostir reported. According to Dzemilev, Kuchma is the first Ukrainian president to have offered the Crimean Tartars help after they lost their statehood.

In addition, Dzemilev said it would be difficult for him “to explain to his compatriots how they [the Tartar leaders] turned out to be in the same rank with communists.”
