The name 'Sinop' origins from the legend of Sinope, daughter of the river god Asopus. Zeua fell in love with her and promised to grant her any wish. Sinope did not want to marry Zeus and asked for eternal virginity. Zeus then left her alone in solitude at the tip of the peninsula.
The first settlements date from 4500 BC and Sinop was used as a trading centre for centuries.
On November 30, 1853, Russia attacked Sinop and many died after which the Crimean war started. |
